Gabor Maté, MD

“I’ve grown up with the awareness of how terrible and difficult life can be for some people through no fault of their own. It helps me feel there is good work to be done everywhere.” – Gabor Maté

Gabor Maté is a Hungarian-born Canadian physician who specializes in the study and treatment of addiction. He ran a private family practice in East Vancouver for over twenty years and was the Medical Co-ordinator of the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital for seven years. He now serves as the staff physician at the Portland Hotel, a residence and resource centre for the people of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Many of his patients suffer from mental illness, drug addiction and HIV, or all three.

Widely recognized for his unique perspective on Attention Deficit Disorder, and his firmly held belief in the connection between mind and body health, he is a sought-after dynamic, effective and inspiring speaker and seminar leader on these topics.

Gabor is the bestselling author of In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction, When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress and Scattered Minds, and co-author of Hold On To Your Kids. He is a contributor of articles and commentary to The Vancouver Sun and The Globe and Mail on subjects ranging from health to politics.

“Gabor Maté’s connections - between the intensely personal and the global, the spiritual and the medical, the psychological and the political - are bold, wise and deeply moral.” - Naomi Klein
