Steven Aung, MD

"We have to respect the patient and treat them like a member of our own family. We have to treat them all with love and kindness. We shouldn't just call it 'integrated medicine,' but 'integrated compassionate medicine'."
– Dr. Steven K.H. Aung

Steven K.H. Aung, MD, who was recently appointed the prestigious Order of Canada, blends and melds the synergistic qualities of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western biomedicine, work that’s been his passion for more than three decades.  Dr. Aung, a renowned geriatric and family physician and professor at the University of Alberta, has taught medical Qi Gong to thousands of people around the globe.  He’s been a World Health Organization advisor on acupuncture nomenclature and cancer pain control, and he now serves as its advisor in acupuncture standardization worldwide.

The tapestry of TCM and Western biomedicine weaves the centrepiece for Dr. Aung’s unique integration of the two disciplines.  His grandfather, a traditional Chinese physician, hoped that one of his grandchildren would choose the path of medicine.  The young Steven embraced that hope, supporting and nurturing a more natural and compassionate approach to primary health care for all. "I quickly realized that any kind of medicine that is good for the patient should be used, regardless of where it's from," Aung explains. "That philosophy has been in my heart and on my mind all my life. I can still hear my grandfather's words, so I carry that mission with me."

Dr. Aung has written many articles and books on TCM, as well as Chinese calligraphy and painting. He’s received the Alberta Order of Excellence, the Ancient Mystical Order of the Rosicrucian International Humanitarian Award and the Physician of the Century Award from the Alberta Medical Association. aung.com
