Building A Vocal Community™: Singing in the African American TraditionAug 9 - 14, 2010
Presented by: Ysaye Barnwell
City of Songs: Community Singing Masterclasses - see below. Experience the uplifting, joyful, soulful power of African-American choral singing. There is an awesome power in the human voice, and when uncommon voices are blended for the common good, they become a vocal community at its best. Learn calls, chants, spirituals, ring shouts, hymns, gospels and freedom songs as we fuse and harmonize our voices in the spirit of Africa. Explore the African political, social and historical context, and take a closer look at the African-American worldview and the rituals associated with the songs. Gain new insight into how leadership is shared among community members, and how a shared communal experience can make an impact in your personal life. Your willingness and love of singing is all that is required. Ysaye M. Barnwell, Ph.D., performed with the internationally renowned African-American female quintet Sweet Honey in The Rock for over twenty years. She has been building “vocal communities” around the world for the past two decades. www.ymbarnwell.com TUITION: $565 CDN (meals & accommodation extra) / 5 nights DRAFT program schedule shown below.
