Plants, Minds and Resonances

Jul 31 - Aug 4, 2013

Presented by: Cosmo Sheldrake, Merlin Sheldrake, Rupert Sheldrake

  • Science & Spirit
  • The Natural World

A unique opportunity to join Rupert Sheldrake, biologist and author of Science Set Free, and his sons,  Merlin, a musician and tropical botanist working in the jungles of central America, and Cosmo, a musician and anthropologist, working in the hedgerows of rural England. Investigate memory in nature, plant forms, symbiosis, gardening and ethnobotany, combined with explorations in forests and on seashores.

Rupert’s ideas about morphic resonance imply that we all draw upon a collective memory, and in turn contribute to it. Our own memories are not stored in our brains, which are more like TV receivers than video-recorders. Plants too have memories expressed through their forms, and animal instincts are like habits of the species.  Nature is not unconscious and machine-like, but alive. Everything is rhythmic, and music gives us direct experiences of the flow of life and mind. This is a workshop about ideas, our relationship with the non-human world, science and its limitations, the nature of minds, new ways of looking at plants, and self-exploration through music, song, outdoor experiences, and the sharing of personal stories.

Rupert Sheldrake, PhD, is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and many books including Science Set Free, Morphic Resonance and Dogs That Know When Their Owners are Coming Home. He taught biology at Cambridge University, and worked in an international agricultural institute in India. sheldrake.org

Merlin Sheldrake is a musician, scientist and facilitator. Currently working on his PhD at Cambridge, Merlin spends much of his time studying symbiotic fungi in the jungles of Central America.

Cosmo Sheldrake, anthropologist and musician, is a master looper and multi instrumentalist. Playing jazz and classical piano from the age of 4, Cosmo composes and produces for film and theatre in addition to playing with The Gentle Mystics.
