Heart Matters: The Science of Emotions with Dr. Gordon Neufeld
Empathy and compassion cannot be taught formally, but develop spontaneously in a child whose need for connection and contact are properly met. Explore the challenging topic of emotion, in both our children and ourselves.
Conscious Parenting: Becoming the Parents Our Children Need with Gabor Maté, MD
As we bring children into this world, many of us are determined to avoid the mistakes of our own parents and to be parents who nurture our children the best we possible. Somewhere along the way many of us are dismayed to find that our fondest intentions are not being fulfilled, that we are behaving and speaking in ways we would not have imagined. We become frustrated in the parenting task either by our children, or ourselves, or both. At such times we also tend to blame ourselves, or our children.
What is really happening is that we run up against our own unconscious programming, hidden beliefs we developed in childhood that, unwittingly, we still carry. These beliefs stand between our love for our children and our practical capacity to offer them the nurturing support they need. This workshop will focus not on parenting as a set of skills, but as a relationship--with our children and, primarily with ourselves. Our children deserve the best of us and, to give them that, we have to know also how to give it to ourselves.
